Let’s Have A Chat With Janice: The Visionary Behind Inspiring Interior Designs at IDI

Are you curious about what drives innovative interior design? Meet Janice, Regional Design Director of IDI, whose passion for creativity and culture transforms spaces into meaningful experiences. In this exclusive interview, Janice shares her source of inspiration, memorable projects, and her unique approach to design that balances aesthetics with purpose.

Inspiration Beyond the Obvious: The Heart of Janice’s Creativity

Janice believes that inspiration is all around us—found in the energy, ideas, and challenges faced by those around her. She stays curious, constantly asking questions and exploring beyond the surface. For Janice, curiosity fuels creativity, allowing her to see design not just as a visual solution but as a response to culture, context, and human behavior.

“Design is about creating spaces that resonate with people, spaces that tell a story,” she says.

A Memorable Journey: Designing a Maldives Resort with Cultural Roots

One of Janice’s most unforgettable projects was designing a resort in the Maldives. This project allowed her to incorporate indigenous materials and traditional construction techniques, creating a space that was playful, culturally rooted, and deeply personal to its environment. The result was a blend of fun, authenticity, and meaningful design—an experience that truly connected the space with its locale.

The Power of Emotional Connection in Design

Janice recalls a moment when a client was emotionally moved during a walkthrough. That moment reaffirmed her belief that good design goes beyond visual impact; it’s about crafting spaces that evoke feelings, reflect identity, and evoke memories. A well-designed space should speak to its inhabitants, creating a sense of belonging and comfort.

The Art of Balancing Functionality and Beauty

For Janice, clear design concepts make it easier to balance functionality with aesthetics. She emphasizes storytelling—connecting purpose with form. When a design is rooted in a strong intention, the functionality naturally enhances the beauty of the space, creating a seamless narrative that elevates the environment.

Influences from Philippines and Japanese Architecture

Janice has a deep appreciation for the quiet strength and sincerity found in Philippines and Japanese architecture. She admires the innocence and authenticity of traditional Filipino forms and the clean, deliberate lines of Japanese design. Influences like Kenzo Tange’s disciplined architecture and Zaha Hadid’s bold, fluid structures inspire her to think conceptually and push boundaries.

Discover How Culture, Curiosity, and Creativity Shape Exceptional Spaces

Janice’s journey exemplifies how a curious mind, cultural appreciation, and a clear narrative can create impactful and meaningful designs. Whether it’s a luxury resort or an intimate space, her approach reminds us that the best designs are those that speak to our shared human experiences.
